Traveling to + living in Ireland

Student visa information: U.S. citizens studying in Ireland for a semester do not need a visa but will be required to register with Irish immigration authorities after arrival.

Air travel: Exchange students will be responsible for arranging and purchasing their own round-trip international airline tickets for dates appropriate for the term at the host university. Exchange students should only purchase tickets once UGhas confirmed the dates of arrival. Students who are nominated for the exchange are eligible to apply for a travel grant from College International.


Nearest international airport: Dublin (DUB)


Housing: UG has on-campus student residences as well as an advisory service for off-campus accommodation. Students are advised to start looking for housing early.

Pre-departure orientation: College International staff will provide an orientation the prior semester to help students prepare for their programs. Students on a spring exchange are invited to take GLLC-G 291 Study Abroad: Before You Go, a one-credit, second eight-weeks course in the fall term.


Departure preparation + arrival details: Students will have an orientation session with the University of Galway International Office. Students may also meet individually with academic advisors in preparation for the exchange program.

  • Tuition: IU Tuition
  • Housing: $2,750-$4,125
  • Food: $1,300
  • Transportation, books, and incidentals: $2,000
  • IU Education Abroad administrative fee: $238
  • Plus insurance, visa, airfare
