Course description:
This study tour is an optional two-credit companion course to the Spring semester course HISP-S 429.
The program builds on the themes of foundations of sociolinguistics, sociolinguistics of Southern Spain, and language and gender. Students will conduct research at the University of Murcia as well as in the community, focusing on the linguistic landscape of Murcia and the linguistic differences between genders. Using conceptual knowledge from S 429, students will discover how language is used by paying attention to official vs. non-official signs and language usage, while discovering the historical and demographic configuration of the city. Furthermore, students will carry out data collection in order to complete a perception project examining language attitudes and gender difference among Murcian Spanish speakers. The group will visit historical and cultural landmarks in Murcia and other regions in Southern Spain.

Course fee: Approximately $2,000. Includes housing, some meals, excursions, and health insurance. Student is responsible for flights and personal expenses, plus two credits of spring semester tuition.
Eligibility requirements: Minimum 2.8 GPA. Required enrollment in HISP-X 429.
Process: All students interested in taking the semester HISP-S 429 course must indicate their interest and their intent to participate in the travel course (or not) by completing this form: HISP-S 429 Authorization to Enroll Form
Both HISP-S 429, the semester course, and HISP-X 395, the travel course, are locked for enrollment and you will not be able to enroll yourself. You must first indicate interest in the semester course, then, if interested, apply and be accepted to the study abroad program. After your acceptance, you will receive permissions to enroll in the appropriate course.
